A Canva email signature is a design you build in Canva and then export as an image. Canva’s own signature page describes the result as your branding “in a single image”, and its help centre says exporting a signature as HTML is not yet available. That is fine for a banner or a logo, but it limits links, editing and rollout across a team.
We make emailfooter, which builds signatures from text instead, so read this as one side of the comparison. Everything about Canva below comes from Canva’s own pages, opened in October 2026. Canva prices and plans change and may vary by region, so check its pricing page before you pay.
Canva email signature, in brief
- What you get: a designed image. Canva says to download it as a high-resolution image and upload it to your email platform.
- Links: Canva’s help says hyperlinks only work on PDF files, and not on PNG or JPG. For signatures, it suggests uploading each icon as a separate image and adding a link to each in your email app.
- Best for: one person who wants full visual freedom, or a banner or logo inside a text signature.
- Less good for: a team that needs identical, editable, accessible signatures. Every change means re-exporting and re-pasting.
How a Canva email signature works
These steps follow Canva’s email signature page, read in October 2026:
- Open Canva in a browser or the mobile app, and search for “Email signatures”.
- Pick a layout. Canva says its templates are free to start from, and you can filter by style and theme.
- Design it. Edit the text for name, job title, contact info and address. Change the fonts, sizes and colours. Upload a headshot or logo, or use the free media library for icons and illustrations.
- Collaborate if you need to. Canva says you can invite other Canva users to work on the same layout in real time, lock parts of the design and leave comments.
- Save it. The page says to download the final signature as a high-resolution image, then upload it to your email platforms. If you are signed in, the design is saved so you can edit it again.
The step Canva does not do is the last one. Your mail app’s settings are where the image goes, and our guides to adding an image to a Gmail signature and adding a signature in new Outlook show where. Google’s help page on Gmail signatures adds one catch: images from Google Drive must be publicly shared to show in a signature.
What the Canva email signature does to links and text
Canva’s help page on hyperlinks says hyperlinks only work on PDF files, not on PNGs, JPGs or video, and that image formats do not support hyperlinks regardless of the source. Its page on email signature problems recommends common image formats like JPG or PNG that most email clients accept, and says exporting as HTML is not yet available.
So the whole Canva email signature is one picture. In practice that has these consequences:
- The phone number and website are pixels. The reader cannot tap the number or click the website, because the link was lost at export. Canva’s own workaround is to add links per image inside your mail app.
- The text cannot be selected or read by software. Whether it is accessible depends on the alt text you add in your mail app, which Canva’s pages do not cover. Our guide to an accessible email signature explains what to write.
- Images can be hidden. Mail apps may not show pictures until the reader allows them. If your signature is only an image, the reader may see an empty box. This is general behaviour, not something Canva states, and the article on an image email signature goes into it.
- Changes mean a new export. A new job title means editing the design, downloading it again, and replacing the image in every mail app.
None of this makes Canva wrong. It makes the picture the right size for a banner, and the wrong container for contact details.
Canva email signature pricing, read in October 2026
Canva’s pricing page showed these figures, in US dollars for the version we opened, with a note that prices exclude applicable tax:
| Plan | Price shown |
|---|---|
| Free | US$0, for one person |
| Pro | US$120 a year, for one person |
| Business | US$210 a year, per person |
| Enterprise | Contact sales |
The signature page itself calls the generator free and says you get free templates. The paid tiers add features such as more templates and brand tools, but we did not find a signature-specific feature on the plans page, so we do not claim one. At those prices, 10 people on Business would be US$2,100 a year, which is our arithmetic, though only the people who design signatures need accounts.
Using a Canva email signature well: a hybrid approach
You do not have to choose between a picture and text. A practical pattern is to keep the contact details as text and use Canva for the one thing it does best:
- Design only the logo or a slim banner in Canva, not the whole block.
- Download it as a PNG or JPG, which is what Canva recommends.
- In your mail app’s signature box, type the name, title, phone and email as text.
- Insert the Canva image beneath, and add a link to it in your mail app, as Canva’s help describes.
- Add alt text, so the picture means something when it does not load.
That keeps the phone number tappable and the design yours. It does not solve the team problem, because each person still pastes their own signature.
Where Canva is the better choice
- Design freedom. You can use any font, illustration or layout. emailfooter offers ten layouts and 24 colour themes, and nothing outside them.
- One-off personal signatures. A freelancer can build a good one in minutes without installing anything.
- Banners and campaigns. A seasonal banner designed in Canva can sit under any text signature.
- Team design work. Canva’s shared editing and comments suit a design team agreeing a look.
Where a text signature is the better choice
emailfooter is the free, GPL-licensed WordPress plugin we build at Ulrea. The admin chooses a layout and theme, adds a logo, and can set a legal footer under every signature. Each employee fills in their own details, copies the result and follows numbered steps for their mail app. There are guides for 16 mail apps. Names, numbers and links come out as text, and the logo, photo and icons as images.
