How to remove email signature in Gmail depends on where the signature lives. On a computer, open Settings, then See all settings, scroll to Signature, click the signature, click Delete, confirm, and click Save Changes. A phone has its own signature that this does not touch. These steps follow Google’s Gmail signature help page, read in October 2026, plus its Android and iPhone versions.
How to remove email signature in Gmail
- Computer: Settings, See all settings, then Signature.
- Click the signature, click Delete, confirm with Delete.
- Click Save Changes at the bottom, or nothing happens.
- Phone: the Gmail app has a separate Mobile signature.
- One message only: change that draft, not the setting.
How to remove email signature in Gmail on a computer
Google lists these actions for deleting a signature on the computer.
- Open Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings, then See all settings.
- Under “General,” scroll to “Signature.”
- Click the signature you want to remove.
- Click Delete, then Delete again.
- At the bottom, click Save Changes.
Step 6 is the one people forget. Google ends every signature route with Save Changes, so treat it as part of the job.
If you have several signatures, only the one you selected goes. The others stay in the list. This is also how to turn off a signature you rarely use without touching the one you need.
How to remove email signature in Gmail, or just stop it appearing
Deleting removes the signature entirely. Some people want something milder: keep the text for later but stop it appearing on every message. Google’s page says you can choose a default signature for new emails and for replies, which is the control for that job.
Here the page is thin. It does not name the defaults drop-downs, and it does not describe a “No signature” choice. Open the Signature section, read what your screen offers beside the signature, and test with a new draft. If you want the text back later, copy it into a note before you press Delete. Google’s page describes no way to undo a deletion.
How to remove email signature in Gmail for one email only
Sometimes the problem is one message: a short note to a colleague, say, where a full block looks silly. Google’s page has no step for removing a signature from a single draft. What it does describe is Insert signature at the bottom of the compose window, for changing the signature while you write.
Everything beyond that is ordinary editing and not a Google instruction: the signature in a draft is text in the message body, so you can select it and delete it before sending. Check the draft once more after the signature goes, because Gmail may have placed it below the quoted text of a reply.
How to remove email signature in Gmail on Android and iPhone
A signature you delete on the computer does not clear the phone. Google’s Android page says the Mobile signature shows up only for emails you send from the Gmail app. Both mobile pages carry the same tip: if you don’t create a signature in the Gmail app, new messages use the signature from your computer.
| Where | What Google’s page says | What it does not say |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Menu, Settings, pick the account, Mobile signature, enter text, OK | How to remove or clear the mobile signature |
| iPhone and iPad | Menu, Settings, then Signature settings under “Compose and Reply”, turn on “Mobile Signature”, save with Back | How to turn it off or remove it |
So on the phone, Google tells us how to set the signature and stays silent on removing it. The iPhone page names a “Mobile Signature” switch and only describes turning it on. Open the same screen, look at the switch and the text box, and see what your version of the app offers. The Gmail signature on iPhone guide has the setup path.
Because of that tip, clearing the mobile text could bring your computer signature back on phone mail. Send yourself a test after any change.
Why the signature keeps coming back after you remove it
If you followed how to remove email signature in Gmail to the letter and a signature still appears, one of these is usually the reason.
- Save Changes was missed. Reopen Settings and look at the list.
- Another address is selected. If you use “Send mail as”, Google says you can add a different signature for each address, using the drop-down above the signature box. Delete it under each address that has one.
- The phone signature. See the table above.
- A reply thread. An earlier message in the chain may carry its own signature in the quoted text. That is old text from the sender, not your current setting.
- Typed by hand. A closing line you add in the message body every time is not a signature setting.
- Another account in the same app. On a phone with several accounts, Google says the change is made account by account.
A different angle: if you actually mean a signature that is hard to find, not one you want gone, Google’s troubleshooting page says it might be below the message body, separated by two dashes. Scroll down and click Show trimmed content.
What a removed signature leaves behind
Once you know how to remove email signature in Gmail, remember that the message then ends with whatever you typed last. For business mail that is rarely enough: customers still need a name, role and number. A common pattern is to remove the long computer block from replies and keep a short one, which is easier to arrange with defaults than by deleting. Changing a Gmail signature covers the edit route, and several signatures in one account covers the list.
Here is a short version drawn by emailfooter, for the kind of reply where a full block is too much:

Remove a Gmail signature across a company
When a firm changes its branding, every employee has to find the old signature and delete it. Nothing in Google’s pages describes an administrator removing personal signatures from every mailbox, so the practical route is a message listing the steps. emailfooter is a free WordPress plugin that publishes the current design and numbered steps for each mail app. It cannot reach into a mailbox, so people still carry out the change, and it is English-only for now. The question of how to remove email signature in Gmail then becomes a two-line instruction in an announcement.
